All world champions since 2014 at the start – Preparations are going according to plan
Thursday, 19 August 2021
In about a month, the Duathlon World Championships will take place in Switzerland (Zofingen). Despite considerable extra work due to the Covid-19 protection concept, the organizers are happy that the event can take place after a year of pandemic-related break.
Every week new duathletes register to participate in the 32nd Powerman Zofingen. They far outnumber those registered who have withdrawn their participation for various reasons. Stefan Ruf, president of the organizing committee Powerman Zofingen, considers this as a good sign. It is also pleasing to see how many top athletes will be present in Zofingen. With Diego van Looy, Belgium (2019), Gael Le Bellec, France (2014, 2015, 2018), Seppe Odeyn, Belgium (2016) and Maxim Kuzmin, Russia (2017), all world champions since 2014 are at the start.
While some nations are still awaiting confirmation from World Triathlon, the Swiss lineup is defined: Nina Zoller, Melanie Maurer, Sarah Noemi Frieden, Daniela Schwarz, Andreas Kälin, Fabian Zehnder, Jens-Michael Gossauer, Michael Ott, Richard Lustenberger and Michael Pfanner will start at the World Cup race.
Protection concept is now being implemented
The Covid protection concept recently submitted to the international federation World Triathlon has been confirmed with certain corrections. The concept requires that any person seeking entry to the race site must measure the body temperature. “We are prepared to contribute everything in our power to ensure that we experience a safe competition in Zofingen,” Stefan Ruf was recently quoted as saying.
The Covid concept requires extraordinary infrastructure work. The effort is high in various respects. Nevertheless, one is not deterred by it: World Triathlon Powerman Long Distance Duathlon World Championships should take place as planned on September 18 and 19, 2021. Stefan Ruf: “This is what both the athletes and the sponsors expect.”
